New York, USA
‘Anything but an office’ was the design brief from longstanding clients for this financial headquarters, in New York. Set over two floors of a commercial building on Park Avenue, we linked the two previously-separate storeys by installing a bespoke, blackened steel spiral staircase with solid brass spindles enabling easy circulation whilst enhancing the visual connection between the floors.
To bring the foliage of the outside inside, we also designed a glazed orangery: wooden beams, antique furniture and tiled flooring adding to its clubbable atmosphere. Previously an empty shell, the interior now has separate areas designed to exude a residential feel, including a dining room, several meeting rooms, a sitting room and breakout areas all furnished with antiques sourced for the project.
A central coffee station, where guests and employees can mingle, was designed to be flexible. The countertop, which has hidden fridge drawers beneath, was designed to look like a freestanding table and can be used as both a bar or buffet for events. Bespoke furniture, including solid oak desks at ergonomic heights, and the antique pine floors, add to the feel that you have stepped in to a private member’s club – not an office.
